Asbestos is the name given to six naturally occurring fibrous silicate minerals. The word ‘asbestos’ is derived from a Greek adjective meaning inextinguishable and was admired because of its soft and pliant properties including its stability and strength. However, the microscopic fibrils in asbestos are so abrasive that once broken down, if inhaled, they can cause lung-scarring illnesses and even lead to lung cancer.

Asbestos can lurk in many places throughout your home from basement to attic. Because asbestos can't be seen with the naked eye, common asbestos-containing materials should be tested by an accredited laboratory prior to being disturbed for removal. Common asbestos-containing materials that should be tested include: sheet vinyl flooring, popcorn ceilings, plaster, drywall, floor tile, insulation, wallboard, wallboard joint compound, pipe cement, mastic, exterior cement tile siding, pipe wrap, roofing tiles, roof flashing and other fibrous building materials.

The included test kit offers a laboratory test which identifies if asbestos fibers are present in your material using Polarized Light Microscopy. Materials containing greater than 1% asbestos should be removed by a licensed abatement contractor. Laboratory results are provided within 3 days of receiving the return shipment to Micro Air. Faster turnaround is available for an additional fee, selection can be made at checkout. Mastic attached to flooring is analyzed as a separate sample. Please select 2 samples to cover the cost of the additional test.

Vermiculite Insulation is sampled and analyzed differently. There is an additional fee for vermiculite samples. Please select vermiculite insulation when ordering.
